Bar Margaret
UnclaimedBar Margaret sits in the Village of West Greenville, the old textile-mill district turned arts quarter, on the walkable stretch of galleries and studios along Pendleton Street. It reads more like an art-filled living room than a bar, soft lighting and curated work on the walls, the kind of low-key, laid-back room where people settle in rather than turn up. What surprises people is that the food keeps pace with the drinks. The cocktail list runs creative and strong, with pours like a tequila Old Fashioned and an Old Cuban, but the kitchen is doing real work too: a smash burger that gets singled out again and again, Aunt Say's loaded fries piled with pimento cheese, bacon, and a fried egg, plus truffle fries and Korean chicken bites. It's a genuinely good spot for both a serious drink and a serious burger, which is rarer than it sounds. The room is easygoing and open to everyone, better suited to a long conversation than a loud night out. As the bar itself puts it, it doesn't expect to be the only place you drink, just the one you keep thinking about when you're somewhere else.

Neat Bourbon Bar
UnclaimedTucked below street level on North Main, Neat is where downtown Greenville goes when the night calls for something poured slow. It opened here in 2019 and has since grown to other South Carolina towns, but this is the original room, and it still carries the low lit, prohibition era feel that keeps regulars coming back. The heart of the place is the whiskey wall, 120 plus bourbons and whiskeys spanning Tennessee and Kentucky staples, pours from Scotland, Ireland, Japan and Canada, and allocated rarities like Pappy Van Winkle, WhistlePig and Blade & Bow that surface for those who know to ask. If sipping neat is not your speed, the bar is just as known for its craft cocktails, including a house New Fashioned that drinkers point to. There is real food here too, not an afterthought. Think housemade bourbon and bacon mac and cheese, a chef's charcuterie board, and bacon popcorn made with Greenville's own Poppington's. The weekday happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 7, and the room takes bookings for private parties and corporate nights. Reviewers keep circling the same idea, a cool and comfortable basement hideaway that feels like a secret without the attitude. The bourbon list rotates fast, so the rare allocated bottles on hand change week to week. Anyone chasing a specific pour is smart to call ahead and see what is open. Guests must be 21 or older.

Le Petit Croissant
UnclaimedThe almond croissant is the one people come back for, flaky and light with a soft center and just enough butter, and plenty of visitors will tell you it is the best they have found in Greenville. Right beside the pastry case sit small-batch chocolates and truffles made in house by the shop's chocolatier, which is what first put this little French bakery on the map. The room itself is small and unfussy, a handful of tables inside and a bit of seating out front where dogs are welcome. Past the croissants you will find macarons, fruit tarts, eclairs, quiche, and proper French baguettes that carry over into the breakfast and lunch sandwiches, with coffee roasted in house to go with them. The owners also run hands-on croissant and chocolate-making classes, and the morning favorites tend to sell out, so getting there early on a weekend pays off. It sits directly across South Main from Falls Park on the Reedy, in the historic West End, an easy stop before a walk across the Liberty Bridge or on the way to a game at Fluor Field.

Great Harvest Bread Co - Greenville SC
UnclaimedGreat Harvest runs on a simple idea: whole-grain breads and muffins built on Montana wheat, where the grain itself is the main event rather than an afterthought. It's a name you'll find in other towns too, but the loaves and muffins here are baked for the people who come through the door each morning. For a lot of folks around the Upstate, it's the easy answer when they want a real loaf to take home, or something warm to grab on the way out.

Dolce Italy
UnclaimedSome of us will never get to a pasticceria in Genoa or a caffe in Sicily, and this family opened up so we wouldn't have to. Dolce Italy is run by bakers whose roots run back to Genoa and Sicily, from a line of pastry chefs, and it shows in work made entirely from scratch with ingredients carried over from Italy alongside local ones. The lineup runs sweet to savory: cannoli, cassata, and gelato, cookies like amaretti, anise, sesame, and cuccidati fig cookies, plus crusty Italian breads, focaccia, and savory Sicilian cooking. Order an espresso over a scoop of gelato and you have an affogato done right. Two dozen or more pastries come out fresh daily, so the case is rarely the same twice. The road here covered some ground, from baking for restaurant kitchens around Los Angeles to a first shop in Rochester, New York, before opening here in 2022. Regulars, homesick Italians among them, keep saying one bite puts them right back home. Which pastry becomes your regular is something you settle one visit at a time.
